Les Arenes - this Roman amphitheatre built with dry stones in
around 100 AD is one of the best preserved in the world.
The Maison Carree is one of the most beautiful Roman temples
in Europe. It was built in 5 AD to honour the adopted sons of
Emperor Augustus.
Head out to the Jardin de la Fontaine. France's first public
garden, created in 1750, is home to the Roman monuments of the
Source de la Fontaine and Temple de Diane.
From Tour Magne, see the magnificent view of Nimes and the surrounding
countryside.
Visit the Carre d’Art, a striking and futuristic building, housing
exhibitions of modern art.
Stroll through the old town and enjoy the shops, daily markets,
cafes and restaurants.
Pont
Du Gard - 27km - 30 minutes by car
The Pont du Gard is a World Heritage Site, built 2000 years
ago. Over 1000 people worked for 5 years on the construction
this spectacular aqueduct.
Standing in a natural environment of 165 hectares of Mediterranean
countryside, visitors
can take a 'gentle stroll' or 'long walk' along one of
the marked circuits.
The museum has full scale replicas, maps, multi-screen images,
video and sound archives to help you explore and understand
the monument.
Walk through the Mémoires de garrigue', an informative
trail through15 hectares of restored agricultural parcels that
demonstrate the efforts and actions of the men who have shaped
the land over the past 2000 years:
Canoe or Kayak Les gorges du Gardon and paddle under the Pont
du Gard.
Uzes
– 40km - 45 minutes by car
Charming and elegant medieval town
Meander through the maze of small streets and shaded squares
lined with 17th and 18th century private residences and browse
in the craft and antique shops.
Visit the impressive Duche (Ducal Palace) to see the fine period
furniture, tapestries and paintings.
Take a walk through the beautifully landscaped Jardin Medieval.
The colourful and atmospheric market is on Saturdays.
Spend a delicious moment at the haribo sweet factory with family
discovering haribos famous candies.
A
little further afield, the picturesque town of Anduze occupies
a stunning location on the Gardon River, where the Languedoc
plain ends and the Cevennes National Park starts.
Ride on the
Cévennes Steam Railway to discover the valley of the
Gardons and its fine panoramas. Nearby, is the Bambouseraie
de Prafrance. Unique in Europe, this bamboo plantation with
exotic gardens makes an interesting visit.
